Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH 7.31.11

This post will introduce a slightly new direction for the HippieAngst blog.  Something I've been thinking about doing for a while, expanding posts to include anything baseball related.  On Sunday, July 31st, 2011, I ventured off to Cleveland's Progressive field for my first Indians game.  The outing was more about family rather than the actual game, which is why I didn't scoff too much at the tickets my cousin got for the mini family reunion.  When I saw where our seats were (500 section, upper deck, close to home), I had to remind myself that I was attending to re-connect with my aunt and other cousin that I haven't seen in over 2 decades.
The view from our seats taken from my crappy phone camera.

While the view wasn't bad for the $14.00  ticket price, I have been spoiling myself with the tickets for other major league ball parks I've visited. I'm used to sitting close to the dugout about 10-20 rows up, close to the action where we can hear the pop of the glove and the occasional cuss word.

Anyway, the whole experience with the family was good.  I am glad I went to re-connect with the cousins and got to check another ballpark off my list.  However, the ballpark experience wasn't that great; I've definitely been to better ballparks.

Outside the ballpark, it seemed like there was a good vibe going on with some pubs close by and street vendors with reasonably priced souvenirs, peanuts, and bottled water.  Getting to the ballpark from I-90 was also a snap, and I was off the freeway, parked, and heading across the street to the ballpark within minutes.  The parking rates were ridiculous though at $15 to $20 dollars.  This is something the locals may know how to get around.  One thing that I found disconcerting was the fact that the team store was closed due to the 1.05 pm game time.  I figured the team store would be open before games so fans could get a shirt or whatnot.  I was on the hunt for a shirt and did get one inside the ballpark (more on that in a bit).

Inside the ballpark (after getting through the VERY loose security where the guard asked my cousin if his bag was all baby stuff, noticing the baby he was carrying and let him go without a search or second glance), the atmosphere seemed good.  Lots of fans decked out in Indians gear milling about and getting ready for the afternoon game.  I did stop at a souvenir vendor and got my t-shirt for only $20.  I've seen more expensive shirts at concerts and other ballparks.  At this point, it seemed like we were in for a nice afternoon until we got to the upper deck.

First, not all of the restrooms were open for the upper deck, and there wasn't any sign on the restroom doors indicating why it was closed or where the alternative restrooms were. I did find it though after some hunting. Granted it wasn't a sellout (attendance announced at just over 21,000), but it just seemed odd that not all the restrooms would be open.  I got a hot dog around the second inning, and the dog was rather lackluster.  The bun was smushed and stale, having the texture that it was steamed and prepped hours ago.  At nearly $5 at dog, I would like the bun to be better.  I got a soda to accompany my hot dog (no beer for me since I would be driving right after the game), and the concession stand had no lids or straws.  This wouldn't have been that big of an issue if the seats had cup holders.  Overall, the staff of the concession stands weren't that remarkable or terribly friendly.  They weren't rude by any means either though; just pretty neutral.

Leaving the ballpark, I figured I would hit the restroom one last time only to find the restrooms on the lower, main deck already closed and locked up for the afternoon, which meant I had to hold it for later.  Good thing getting back on the freeway took just minutes like getting to the ballpark in the first place.

All in all, I would give Progressive field the following grades:
Cheap seats view value: B+
Crowd and atmosphere: B- (restrooms please!)
Concessions and food value: D- (only thing keeping this from an F was that I didn't feel sick later that night)
Parking value and accessibility: C (pricey but close to the park)
Getting to and from the park: A (suspiciously easy for me that day)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall experience grade: C+

I would give Progressive Field another chance to see how it would be to have a seat in the lower deck and be able to try some of the other food vendors.  I'll post a review of my experiences at Comerica Park in Detroit soon.

2010 Topps Finest Baseball

For how expensive these hobby boxes were, the cards in this set do look sharp, with the player stand out player against the silver background with an imprinted team logo. While the base set singles aren't worth that much, it was the inserts and code redemption cards that had me buying box after box after box.  One aspect that was exciting was the various levels of refractors that ranged from a print run of 599 to 1.

Check out these refractors up for sale (click on the caption to visit the auction):
#32 of 99 printed

It's sick how good this guy is

He's helped the Pirates take first place!

These rookie autograph patches are another favorite aspect of this set (click on the caption to visit the auction):
Nats' prospect, Ian Desmond

Do you think he likes Brian Wilson's beard?

Reds prospect.

There are a few other autograph patches up for grabs as well.  Click here to visit the store.

Finally, these packs also included the Finest Moments autographs.  I was lucky enough to pull a Robinson Cano red refractors (only 25 of this parallel version printed).  Some lucky buyer can add this to their collection:
2011 All-Star Game home run derby champ.

Unsold and Relisted....Coming Back Again....

While I do enjoy the number of available cards for sale on eBay, it also means that some of my cards up for sale get lost in the shuffle.  Thus, some of last week's auctions went unsold and will be re-listed for this upcoming week.

At times, I wonder what dictates a card's worth on the open market.  Player performance certainly has some merit as well as rarity of the card.  The market on sports cards is indeed finicky and adheres to the laws of supply and demand closely.

Leftover and back again for another round of bidding, these cards are ready to be added to someone's collection (click on the captions to visit that listing):
TOPPS 60 RELICS:
Up and coming Cubs prospect
2011 All-Star game MVP!

Who doesn't love the Cubs?

2011 Topps Complete Series 1 & 2 Set + Bonuses!

Last year, I bought pack after pack while chasing down a complete set.  After spending way too much money and after sorting and stowing away the doubles upon doubles, I finally completed a set.  I know some folks out there probably don't want to chase down packs and just want a complete set in great condition.  On eBay, I've got a hand collected set ready to ship to the first buyer.  The set I'm offering also comes with bonuses.

The first bonus included in this listing is a complete set of the Topps Prime 9 redemption (1-9).  The program is for the collector to visit their local HTA  card shop each week beginning July 18th.  As far as I can tell, there is no option for mailing in the redemption card or an option to redeem online.  Thus, I believe the collector must physically go to their local HTA card shop.  Click here to find your local Topps retailer.

The other bonus included will be a Phil Hughes Topps "60" relic jersey card.  If you're a Yankee fan, this is a nice addition to your 2011 Topps collection.

I've got all the cards of the set in penny sleeves and stored in a classic 800 count white box.  Shipping is included in the sale price, and here's to another fun summer of baseball cards.

2011: Topps Attax is Back!

Topps Attax is back this year and better than ever. I played a few rounds of the 2010 version and found the actual game play a bit limiting with straight forward scoring. This year, the game features hits, fielding, ball parks, and special perks.

At first, the instructions for the game play is a bit on the confusing side, but after playing a mock inning with a friend, it all became rather simple. The expanded play mat and game play really does add a deeper dimension to their initial efforts from last year, so fans of the 2010 version will find more enjoyment in this year.

Coming soon to eBay auctions...

Last year, I was enamored with the Finest baseball set. While I do think the set was a bit heavy handed with the inserts, variants (refractors), and other redemption type cards, the cards themselves are quite stunning. After spending a bit too much money on some boxes, I come across a number of these inserts and variants. However, I have too many on hand, and they need to go.

Soon, I will have some choice singles up for sale in both "you-pick" and auction style listings.

2011 Topps Baseball Card Set...Part 3...

Only 2 Days left with these listings....

Ah, the relic cards. At times, I really think that there is too many versions of these things in the market, but I, for one, do have a nice little collection of relic cards feature my favorite Red Sox players. Thus, I can fully understand the demand for these cards as they do look sharp and are a really nice addition to any collection. In the 2011 Topps set, the other misc. relic-type cards are another nice addition. The Silk Collection variant and the Leather Nameplate bring on some of the excitement of a relic based on their short print rarity. These are up for sale in my eBay shop (click on the "eBay shop" to go to my listings), and some don't have any bids on them yet.
