I remember the good old days of buying up packs of Donruss, Fleer, Topps, Sportflics (when I could afford those packs), and Score. When Upper Deck hit the scene, those cards blew my mind. I think those were the first cards to be priced at over a dollar per pack, a true drain on my allowance.
Now, only Topps survives as the lone baseball card company licensed by the Major League Baseball Players Association, and Topps still has collectors scrambling for packs with their numerous inserts of relics, autographs, sub-sets, parallels, and contests. Yes, the Million Card Giveaway-Cards Your Mom Threw Out has been fun, but unredeemed code cards are now going for just over $4 each on Ebay. $4 for a chance at the infamous '52 Mantle, or a chance at a card you're glad your mom threw out or better yet, wished she had thrown out.
There are a few listings of modern cards in my eBay store, and hundreds listed in my Beckett.com store.
